Continuality Piece

Knowing that my main Media product would be of a Thriller, we decided we would use this piece as a somewhat practise, before beginning our main one. This allowed us to develop methods and have a clearer understanding of a number of techniques that we could use in relation to this particular genre. This includes understanding the effects non-diagetic sounds have in developing feeling and emotion within a story and therefore the importance of them relating well. We also found that facial reactions are important to convey with the use of close ups, drawing you in to the characters themselves and allowing you to see there emotion.

Considering this was the first piece of filming we had done i am pleased with how it turned out. The lighting i believed was good, particularly at the beginning of the piece as although we wanted it to be dark - adding to the mood of the scene and fitting with the time it was aimed to look like it was at -we still ensured that it was light enough for the audience to see what was going on clearly. Having made it black and white also helped in making it look fearful.

We decided to open the piece using a tracking shot of some pipes which allowed us to add our subtitles in here, introducing the story. This was particularly effective, adding a sense of mystery and confusion, immediately resulting in the audience questioning and therefore wanting to watch on. As well as here, i am particular happy with the phone scene. I did this using an over the shoulder shot, looking down onto the phone, with a panning shot of the wires connected to the phone, leading up to a close up of a reaction shot as the narrative is spoken. I found that when editing, the series of fast cuts created a sense of chaos in which was what i was looking for.

I am slightly disappointed with the flashing images of the boy, as i believe they were done too quietly, not giving the audience enough time to take the image in. This may also have been due to the dark lighting. I will be careful not to do this in my main media project, ensuring that the lighting and clips used are easily visible and can be clearly understood. I would also have liked to make the scene a little longer, knowing that it is short. However, creating the story we have using the little amount of time we used i believe was done well. I found completing this continuality task very useful and i will be sure to use what i have learnt in my further piece.
